Walking, Cycling & Touring around Priego de Cordoba in the fabulous Sierra Subbetica of southern Spain

Inland Spain is vast and varied, and the semi-autonomous southern state of Andalucia provides some of the best scenery of all. The countryside around Priego de Cordoba offers outstanding possibilities for walking and for cycling - through valley orchards, hillside olive groves and across wild mountain tops. Tracks and trails abound in the Sierra Subbetica and surrounding countryside. Here are some suggestions, and some useful sources for information

A former railway line is now devoted to walking and cycling, between Moriles and Jaen, a distance of 111 kms, passing close by Cabra, Zuheros (below right) and Luque, skirting the northern edge of the Sierra Subbetica. It is divided into two parts, the Via Verde del Aceite and the Via Verde de la Subbetica (information: www.viasverdes-ffe.com/ ; free leaflet from Mancomunidad de Subbetica office, Carcabuey, Ctra. a Zagrilla)

Long distance footpath GR7 crosses Europe, passing through Andalucia and the Sierra Subbetica along the way. The stretch from Almedinilla to Rute is 32kms, linking historic Priego with the Roman villa of Almedinilla, the Moorish ruins of Rute and weaving among the high sierras along the way. Estimated walk time is 9 hours. Free leaflet pack (with 10 further walks, all in Spanish) from Mancomunidad de Subbetica office, above, and Priego Tourist Office

Maps of inland Spain are hard to come by and are generally very poor at indicating rights of way and footpaths. Mapa Guia Parque Natural Sierra Subbeticas, 1:50,000 by Junta de Andalucia, at least covers most of this corner of inland Spain on a single map. The series Cartografia Militar de Espana 1:50,000 is drafted a little more clearly although the paper is of poor quality. Four maps of this series, Lucena(17-40), Baena(17-39), Alcala la Real(18-40) and Alcaudete(18-39) together cover the patch. All are available from Stanfords of Longacre, London (0207 836 1321, www.stanfords.co.uk ) where they retail at about £6 each and can be ordered over the telephone. To get hold of them much more cheaply visit the map shop at: Libreria INE, Calle Panaderos 2, Malaga

An excellent street map of Priego with a 1:20,000 topographic map of the surroundings shown on the reverse is available cheaply in Priego bookstores. It is published by Junta de Andalucia
